Spring Project 2015

Spring has been one of the most successful seasons for MCAF in Nepal. Enthusiasm and the devotion of all the nineteen World Challenge European, Asian, New Zealand and African Teams made this possible. There were swarms of activities that kept happening one after another from the innovative community service projects to the attractive School in a Bag programme and in between packed with school building projects. It has been successful mainly because of our reach and impact that has risen to a total of 6 schools, serving nearly 1500 children in communities totaling over 12000 people.

At a glance, we were able to set up building foundations, buying new desks & benches, painting the new classrooms, distributing school bags and stationeries. Our growing community of international volunteers who not only spend their valuable time working at rural schools, but also raise funds to enable us to do various programmes has further supported all of these works. When we started in 2004, we did not have the slightest idea that we would continue at such pace and growth. Today, in many of the communities we work with, we have been able to achieve 100% enrolment, a vast increase in community participation in the school affairs and thus a huge change in the way the community people understand and deliver education. While the quality of the education to which we have contributed leaves room for further work, the achievement to date is a clear improvement from the base line we started. For example, we helped a school in the village of Pokhara for the first time to have enough classrooms and resources although the school had been there for 39 years. This was achieved because we focused on the community’s participation and leadership aided by our support. The school has now been upgraded to lower secondary level, thanks to the cooperation of the District Education Office. The achievements we are able to record and our ability to continue working with the communities and keep expanding our work has only been possible due to the generous support that has come from different quarters. In making this happen, our big thanks go to World Challenge as well as to all other international school teams, volunteers and local supporters. Moreover, welcome and farewell programs were remarkable in a complete traditional way. Project teams were rewarded with letter of appreciation and token of love. Interaction programs, taking class to the kids, playing sports, learning cooking lessons and hiking through village were the very rewarding experiences to both Project Teams and the community.

Furthermore, Our Two teams, St Mary’s DSG Pretoria Team-2 (South Africa) and St Margarets College Team-1 (New-Zealand) were on school projects during the devastating earthquake which hit Nepal on 25th April. While many people were traumatized by the disaster, the squads remained valiant and they were dedicated to complete the projects in time. Moreover, no harm was done to any of our project teams with the excellent rescue operation from our most dedicated staffs.

We are very pleased and thankful to all the teams for their great support which helped raise the standard of schools in the backward areas of Nepal. We would like to notify everyone that we have some more community service projects in the near future and project site surveys for site selection are being thoroughly carried out. We are also in search of long term sustainable projects for school building and toilet construction for 2015. Eligible schools are requested to contact our head office as soon as possible.
Many thanks
MCAF!!
